I believe they say you are supposed to have 8 glasses a day?? Is that correct?

This is true, water is excellent for you. But there is such a thing that is know as water intoxication. It is associated with certain medical conditions where an over intake of fluids could be dangerous. So lots of water or fluids isn't always a good thing.

WOW!!! I never heard of that before. Too much water...other than water retention. Thanks for sharing!

It's unbelievable but true, even drinking water is controversial!! :p
Some people say that if you drink too much water it leaches minerals from the body. Some say that drinking distilled water does the same thing, which does make sense to me, since the distilling process removes all the minerals from the water.
Some say that drinking water from plastic bottles is bad, because the plastic releases toxic gasses into the water.
I don't think anyone should drink water straight from the faucet, but maybe there are some areas where the faucet water is safe, I don't know.
I just know that I love a good cold swig of water!! Pure heaven!

Great, I drink all my water from plastic bottles. Wonder how much toxins I am now full of! Just when you think your doing your body good. Speaking of doing a body good...I've heard you can actually drink too much milk! ANyone hear of this??

This is one experts opinion on water.
But first, I will say I drink right out of the tap. I had my water tested by a professional state lab not someone trying to sell me a water treatment system. Yep, I have hard water w/ iron and minerals. But, that is what makes me strong. A few years ago, I had my wtaer "tested" by a commercial distributor. He, in a test beofre my eyes, turned my tap water into thick green sludge. Wonder what he put into it?
Health Tips
"Water, Water Everywhere..
Americans are dehydrated. "We all know that we are supposed to drink between six and eight glasses of water a day, but very few of us do it. Everyone is drinking carbonated drinks and tea and coffee, instead," says J. Michael Flynn, DC. As we learn more about the importance of water?and about the impurities or contaminants that it may carry?many Americans are thinking seriously about what comes out of the tap.
People need clean water to survive. A human can live for weeks without food, but will die after only four days without water. Reports warn that populations around the world are growing?together with demand for more and more good drinking water. Dr. Flynn says, "Blood is two-thirds water. Our brain is 70 to 80 percent water. Water is necessary to make the respiratory and digestive systems work. The disc space between the vertebrae is mostly water. When you're dehydrated, discs are harder to heal and easier to damage." Safe, abundant water is crucial to human survival......"

Now recently studies have shown that one can count caffeine drinks as water intake.
I also have seen a formula to calculate water intake per person depending on body size and weight. Anyone know what it is?

I drink about 3 - 4 glasses of water per day. They say the "recommeded" is 8 per day, but I think that's too much for me.

That's probably one of the most hotly debated questions among the nutritionally conscious, actually. Some claim that drinking too much water will flood out all the vital minerals in our bodies. Others claim a million terrible consequences to not drinking 8 or more glasses of water per day.
I think it might make a difference what kind of water we're drinking. Tap water in many locations is loaded with deadly chemicals, and probably should be avoided at all costs. I've even read that those chemicals invade us through our skin when we bathe or shower, so many people are now investing in full house water purification systems.
Bottled spring water can come from anywhere, so who knows what we're drinking?
Distilled water has no minerals whatsoever, so it probably does leech minerals from the body.
We have a reverse osmosis purification system in our kitchen, I feel ok about that water, but we also do try to remember to supplement our minerals.
Long response to a short question, and still no definitive answers! All I know is that I love water! It's my favorite drink besides my morning coffee obsession! Oh, and then there is that evening wine obsession! :sad11:

Alcohol causes dehydration. I read recently - though I find it hard to believe - that it take 2 glasses of water to make up for the dehydration causes by one alcoholic drink. It's probably a good practice to have at least one glass of water for each alcoholic drink.
Besides being a major cause of hangovers, dehydration is very dangerous. It can cause organ damage and high blood pressure. Not something to take lightly - even mild dehydration if it's chronic. Water also flushes impurities from the body. So I would prefer to err on the side of too much water.
I think that other drinks can also dehydrate, such as those that are caffinated. Soft drinks do not hydrate, so a glass of soda, even non-caffinated, will not help to hydrate the body. Sports drinks such as GatorAid try to replace minerals. Whether they're effective or not, I don't know. But they also tend to contain sugar, which is a deadly drug - think cocaine lite.
I'm a big fan of vegetable and fruit juices. They hydrate the body and provide tons of nutrients and enzymes. Unless they're pastuerized, in which case they'll still have a lot of nutrients, but no enzymes. Freshly squeeze orange juice, freshly extracted carrot juice... If you use at least 50% carrot juice, you can add in other highly nutritious juices, such as spinach and beet, which would taste really nasty by themselves. Also pure beet juice causes a rapid cleansing reaction which can be quite unpleasant.
Carrot and apple seem to work well for ridding the body of infection. I once cured a urinary infection in 3 days with a carrot-apple juice fast. Everyone told me the only way to cure it is via antibiotics. It even tastes pretty good, though I will admit, not as good a cold Pilsner :)

I'm a great believer in fresh fruit and vegetable juices. When I started substituting them for my usual soda and coffee, I found that my chronic headaches, sleeplessness, restlessness and even arthritis pain disappeared. I'm sure that part (or even most) of that was due to cutting out most of the sugar, additives and caffeine, but but the juices definitely do their part.
As far as water goes - I read a very reasonable 'how much you should drink' from a bodybuilding guru - it may not be the most medical authority, but it made a lot of sense. The suggested rule of thumb is 'divide your body weight by two to get the number of ounces of water you should drink every day'. For metric people, the suggestion is to divide your weight in kilos by 30.
You should also keep in mind that if it's hot, you'll need more fluids, if you're active, you'll need more fluids, and if you're sick, you'll need more fluids. Finally, even though most of us love our water icy cold, drinking large amounts of icy water at one gulp does more than give you a headache - it can lower your core temperature rapidly and shock your system. It's best to drink your water 'pleasantly cool'.

I think drinking water is important. If you're short on it, much suffers including internal organs that can't regenerate well.
But too much isn't good, either. There will be a good level for each person individually. Make sure if you sweat a lot to also replace your salts with electrolyte drinks.

Salts or fluids?
Gatorade etc are only for when people play sport, to replace fluids.
Its not recommended to drink these everyday :)

I too drink a lot of water. It's the only thing I drink (beside the occasional alcoholic drink). I always have a bottle with me so I'm not sure how much I drink in a day I just know it's a lot.

I think that drinking a lot of water is important for the body. I don't drink tap water only because it tastes like chlorine - yuck.
When I don't drink much water, I don't feel that great. I always feel better when I drink almost 8 glasses a day. It seems to flush me out.

I second that. I also notice that when I'm getting the right amount of water intake that my skin tends too look better as well.

I hear ya. I drink just over a gallon of water per day, especially after working out. Its what the muscles and metabolism need to keep the system running smoothly.

I believe that water is very necessary but I've never gotten into
specific amounts. One person's "glass" may be 6 ounces while
another's glass is 10 ounces. Precisely why I never put much
stock into the "6 to 8 glasses" thing. But I do like my water!

i thought you were suppossed to be drinking 6-8 8 oz glasses of water a day? Oh, well I drink more than that anyway. For those of you who said you don't like the tap water if you put tap water in a jug/bowl whatever and let it sit overnight or for about 6 hours most of the chemical evaporate away then you can put the water in the fridge to chill it down for drinking. This is a great improvement on the taste of most tap water.

When I'm thirsty I'd rather have a glass of cold water than anything. I think you need to pay attention to your body and drink the amount that makes you comfortable, rather than trying to get a "recommended" amount.

I agree... I think that both too much and too little water aren't the best for our health, so I don't obsess over it and just reach for water when I want to drink instead of other kinds of drinks.

As much as I want to drink 8 glasses per day, I could only consume about 5 in a day. But I can say, water is a natural moisturizer of our skin. Plus, it does great wonders in cleansing down our system.

I also believe in this. I usually drink about three liters a day. I think this is healthy. But sometimes weather conditions also contribute to how much water I would drink. If its cold, I usually drink less like maybe a liter or perhaps less but if its summer, I drink like every thirty minutes or so.:woohoo:
