Don't you know that washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading? It is the simplest and yet the most effective way of keeping the doctor away! But better make sure you properly wash your hands and this may take at least one minute of lathering.

As well if you are not near a washroom. There are small bottles of Purrell that I use. It is a hand sanitizer. i use this in a pinch. It works really well.

I am of the mind that the more germs you expose yourself to (within reason of course), and the more nutritionally sound your diet is, the stronger your immune system will grow. Across the board eradication of germs will just make them mutate and grow stronger.
I had to edit to say Yes, of course I wash my hands, but I think the whole thing with the hand sanitizers etc. is just going overboard.

What drives me nuts is when you see kids or adults go to the bathroom and when they are done don't wash their hands. I see this more than you would think. I find that totally gross. You wouldn't believe how much I see this when I take my son to preschool. In the morning you have to take your child to the bathroom before taking him to the classroom and there is this one child that never washes his hands. I can't help but be glad that this child is not in my sons class. I just find this absoulutly disgusting.

There are actually studies showing that hand sanitzers ARE leading to mutated germs and viruses as well.

I think there has to be a good balance. Of course it's good to wash your hands when they've been exposed to an abundance of germs, but it's also good to let your body learn how to fight off some too. The body has an amazing way of protecting you.
That being said....when I ran a childcare center we would sing "Happy Birthday" twice as they lathered. It's a good way to make sure they're washing long enough to get rid of the yuckies.

oh, i suddenly remembered my hubby. he's just not the most hygienic person i know.well at least that was before i gave him several lectures on hygiene and about how he should wash his hands often. haha. that's an irony for he's actually studying to be a nurse.

There was a story on the internet not long ago, written by a man who was part of a computer convention, a few years ago when it was hosted in New Orleans. He was in the bathroom and Bill Gates came in. Gates went and did his business and then walked out without washing his hands.
Of course, then Gates went around shaking people's hands all day.

:worthy: That sounds like the building block upon which many urban legends
may be built. :)

I just remember seeing television shows where they've taken samples from various areas around the bathroom then cultured them to see what would grow. The toilet seats were the cleanest, while the door handles and knobs had the most bacteria. Scary.

Actually, I had heard that kitchens are actually worse than bathrooms. I'm wondering why, though? I would think that kitchens would be cleaned more carefully than a bathroom, just because you prepare food there.
