The talk show host who reaped in the money. She was very poor as a child but found success in her life. Too bad she does not want to have kids though. She is like the richest talk show host ever with a show that lasts more than 20 years.

Yeah, that was the sad part. I don't see the reason why she doesn't want to have her own family. I think that is what she is advocating about, the importance of a family, rearing kids and everything. But she really had continued on despite all her detractors and other people that is discriminating her still. I think she is great, but I feel she would be greater if she had chosen to give all of her riches to charity. Just a thought.

I heard that she's afraid to have kids because she might have really terrible kids and she does not want to raise those kinds of children. I guess Oprah is just afraid that she'll end up being a bad parent with all the responsibilities that she have with the image that she have.

If the idea of making money was to turn around and give it away, what incentive do you think most folks would have to make money?
If all the rich people divided up their money and gave equally to each person who wasn't a millionaire, we'd all get some pocket change.
Oprah is extremely generous, and can continue to be so because she grows her wealth by managing it rather than giving it all away.
I'm sure that Oprah, coming from poverty, has had lots to learn about how to handle the kind of wealth she has amassed, and I have absolutely no doubt that she will leave the bulk of it in trust to charitable causes when she dies.
If wisely invested, money like Oprah's could continue to fund charitable causes for hundreds of years after she's gone.
In the meantime, a large part of her appeal that continues to generate her huge income is the way she publically enjoys herself and her money. I can't see how it would be a great idea for her to just startt handing it all out now. Why shouldn't she and those she loves enjoy the wealth she's earned?

Speaking of Oprah giving away her money, there are going to be numerous specials on tv tomorrow that detail her newly dedicated School of Leadership for Girls in South Africa. She spent 40 million dollars on it.

I never particularly cared for Oprah way back when in the beginning of her media reign, so I pretty much ignored her since then. But I have heard things of her charity work and think its very good. If I were so rich and did NOT give back in a big way, I would feel horribly guilty.

I don't really watch her show much anymore but I have to give Kudos to Oprah for all the great things she does with her money.

Does anyone else no what other charities she donates to? The reason I ask is because I hope she gives back to the country where she was able to amass her fortune. I have no problem with her building this school in Africa becuse I know that they need the help in Africa. I think it is awesome. But at the same time why can she not build a school in in the States? Just thought I would throw that out there and get others opionions on this.

I'm pretty sure Oprah gives where the need is.
I would have to note that giving is optional, not a requirement, and many celebrities do not donate anything to charity.
Madonna, for instance, didn't donate a single dime of her money to any charity, and only began donating profits from her childrends books to her daughters's school, about 5 years ago.
Now, she, too, has built or is building an orphanage in Africa. I guess that's where the greatest need is.

Yes, I think that if we all got the view of Africa that Oprah and even Madonna have had, we'd all be sending our spare change over there. The need there is dire, maybe even beyond what most of us are willing to think about.
I'm serious when I say that we know how bad the conditions are to have inspired Madonna to think of someone or something besides herself. I think she is talented, but I've never noticed her being an icon to selflessness!
I guess I'm feeling grateful to know that someone has stepped in to do something, and just a bit guilty for not having done anything myself. :crying:

What is up with her and Stedman, though. I remember years ago when she announced that they would be getting married, and that she would give all the details on her show, so that we would get everything straight from her. I remember it went quiet after that. I haven't really followed the show much in recent years, but I know that they still haven't gotten married, so what's the deal?

I really hope that what I wrote doesn't give the wrong impression. I am glad and do understand the need in Africa. As much as I can without having been their. I guess I was just saying that the kids here are our future and I would love them to have chances that they may not get because of poverty or anything else.

i love watching oprah's show. i have to admit i also love her magazine except that almost half of the contents are advertisements. well, i guess those ads make the mag's price lower than it should be. anyway, i applaud oprah for her charitable works and for every kind and inspirational message she has given people. i won't forget how she scolded housewives for saying that "they're just housewives." indeed, she knows that it's not a lowly or an easy job to do.:dork:
