View Full Version : Basic Posting Questions I have

I am your average website poster, w/ basic skills. I have wanted to know more about posting and websites. I thought I'd ask a few general questions as I think of them. Maybe other people have some questions too.
Maybe a FAQ on posting would be helpful unless there is already one here.
1. Would a person have to be a registered member to post? If so, is it not an easy process to post. One can create a username & password w/o sharing any personal info, right. And, it's FREE!!!!!
2. My question: What's the difference between "Reply" and "Quick Reply"? Earlier I wrote about 5,000,000,000 word post in quick reply. Maybe I should of used "reply" or better yet, "New Thread"??
3. Will my email address be displayed? Would my privacy be violated? No, unless I want it to be. I can fully control what info is viewed by the public, right?
:D
(I'll think of more. I am know for thinking up questions.)
Thought of another already.
4. Do I have to be able to type 999 words per minute to post? I'm a rusty, self-taught 40 wpm typist. I look at the keys.
5. Can I play around with colors or size of text. How about font?

OK, now that I bothered to look, I see the websites FAQ. But, I guess some people don't look for it. Oops!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Pam and Debby,
This message board has tons of cool features that are yet to be explored even by me. It's all been about meeting the immediate needs of the moment for me though!
As Pam discovered, the information and instructions are available. It's just that we didn't make it a priority to advertise the features in the early days...who had time for them?
When we "go commercial" all the features will be more of a selling point. Since we went live, we've been all about business! Which is a good thing, IMO!!
Right now I'd love to get more people addicted to volunteerism than message board features, but it is about time we regulars started noticing and taking advantage of the fun stuff too!!
When we have time we'll be adding more fonts, smileys and icons, and making avatars available, lots of ways to amuse ourselves!!

Right now I'm looking for a Christmas template so we can have that Holiday look!!
I love all the lights and trees and snow and all those pretty decorations!!:rotate:
Wish me luck, I have to go into Geek World to find these things!

Oh, the infamous "rep power". It's a long story, but it's an "in" joke amongst us, eh Debby!!
This board has a lot of features that we've not yet figured out how to use or mine. Basically, the idea of rep power is that users can gain status and privileges by attaining certain levels of reputation. We can decide how reputations are established in the board controls, but really haven't given it much consideration to date, although it's becoming more and more clear why and how we might want to start to implement rep power.
Thanks for asking, and we'll definitely be thinking about this, and letting all our members know what the deal is when we've made our decisions.

Okay another techie question:
why do some say major contributor and some say resident.I thought it had to do with number of posts. BUT BUT BUT there are some who have hardly posted who are majors and some who post a bit more who are residents.....not that it really matters but just trying to navigate around is all....

Each user group has it's own titles which we set up. We can also do custom user titles, and we'll be implementing a ranking system eventually where users can graduate into having more features available, such as creating their own user title.
The "Major Contributor" title for the Assembly user group is a joke that we are re-thinking. The Assembly is the dumpster where people go instead of getting banned. It affords them no powers, not even the ability to read the board. We prefer doing that to flat out banning people. They're "Major Contributions" are what got them shipped off to the junk yard!

Do to confusion, we've changed the Assembly designation to "shown the door".
We don't want to appear to be inhospitable, but we also do want our valued contributors and guests to be aware that we're working hard to keep a clean house.
It seems that by hiding the exit door too well, we may have created the impression that we haven't been using it.

I'm having a problem clicking on the "quick links." I keep getting the page that says I don't have permission to access that page ("New Posts," for example). Same when I try to click on the "Members" page. Yet it says I may post new threads, replies, attachments and I may edit my posts. Am I not fully approved for membership yet? I couldn't find anything about this in the FAQs.

Yes, we'll be revisiting it soon, because we're working out how to use it for our upcoming prize giveaways.
As a mod, you'll be involved too, so I guess we should pow-wow on the topic soon.
