Flashlight:
Use the flashlight to find your way if the power is out. Do not use candles or any other open flame for emergency lighting.

Ready-to-eat canned meals, meats, fruits, and vegetables; Canned juices;

Keep at least one gallon of water available, or more if you are on medications that require water or that increase thirst. Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles.

Medications :
Include usual non-prescription medications that you take, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, etc. If you use prescription medications, keep at least three-day's supply of these medications at your workplace. Hi,

Thanks Speckledbird for posting that list. It was very detailed and useful. I wanted to add a few items/comments from my personal experience there last week.

Basically be self-sufficient. Pack as if you are going camping in rugged country w/o electricity or running water.

*Broad Spectrum Antibiotic---good idea to have on hand in case you need it. Even tho numerous types available, Cipro was recommended by others.

*No electricity---when I left Sat, 8 Oct. I was surprized how well natural night vision works. Eyes adjust to seeing in the dark. The US Army taught me eyes take about 30 minutes to gain maximium night vision. I only used a flashlight or lantern for fine detail like reading the label on the MRE packages.

*Protein Food---such as nuts, peanut butter, protein bars/drinks (health food stores).

*For news---I suggest one listen to a large radio station in New Orleans, WWL. They broadcasted on many AM & FM stations while I was there. I'd sit in my car for an hour in the evening and listen to the all news/talk radio station. This is more valuable/useful than one might think. Why? When I asked 2 NOPD officers how they get their info now, 5 weeks after Katrina, they said "From the radio stations". That was why I could inform them that the Orleans Parish curfew had just been changed from 6 to 8 pm & 3,000 non-essential city employees are being laid off. Here's WWL's website link: http://wwl.com/

Map: New Orleans Maps may be obtained at the Troop B Headquarters of the Louisiana State Police - 2101 I-10 Service Road off Williams Boulevard. The telephone number is: Troop B – New Orleans - (504) 471-2775.

Will I was there they had plenty of MRE's & personal care items but that could change easily in a day. You may not need some items on original list but take what you can. It would be a shame to get there and need it while leaving it at home.

Bye, Sparkie

P.S. A few days ago some areas water supply was officially "cleared & declared safe to drink", but I found no one who wanted to chance it yet. East bank area, west of the Industrial canal. They suggested one run all water taps for 15 minutes before drinking.

Sammy was concerned that "Sammy" didn't sound very serious or professional so he told me that we should use Samuel instead in reference to donations, mail, etc. I chuckle alittle to myself because Samuel/Sammy is a hardworking, blue collar, honest southern man. Even tho he was born in New Orleans & has lived in Lake Charles, he is a simple, straightforward country man. Samuel sounds too white-collar for him and his wonderfully informal but effective ways w/ animals. They love him...even killer pits & rots.

I loved Sammy's interview! It is one of my favorites. It was informative but had a simplistic quality that was heartfelt and easy to understand, especially in times that so much is going on. My vote goes to not changing his name to Samuel. There is just something really special about those down to earth self sacrificing country boys/men. Their Mamas taught them well! ;)

I heard from our friend Sammy yesterday and he is still well. He is temporarily working at a construction job doing much needed cleanup in Orleans Parish.
