This is the information I got from my roommate about how he's trying to get the cat's rescued from our evacuated apartment. Please add to this information as much as possible. I know there are bigger worries in the city right now but when those are taken care of it would be nice if some animals could be saved.

***Original text below***

No one knows for sure if any organization is getting clearance to go
into the evacuated areas and get animals out, but it sounds like 3
groups are going to try. Their numbers are here. Anyone with trapped
animals, I'd suggest calling all three and try to get onto a list in
case they are allowed to get animals out. If anyone knows of anyone
else trying to do animal rescue, please post the info. Since it's iffy
whether any group can get in and there are a lot of trapped animals,
it's best to contact as many as possible. (Obviously if you have a
cellphone number for anyone who's still in NO, you should call them
too.)

The HSUS *is* coordinating first-responder type rescue, or so the (very
nice, patient) woman I spoke to believes; they're heading to New
Orleans now. She put me through to voicemail for Mike who's
coordinating disaster response. She said they're getting slammed with
hundreds of voicemails. She said it's OK if people with trapped animals
call her and get put through to Mike's voicemail too, or if they're very
lucky, they might get to talk to someone. I'd suggest any cat owner try
this number along with any others anyone can come up with. If I get a
more direct number for the HSUS's New Orleans effort, I'll post it, but
this is what there is so far.

Hi all,

I'm in the UK and we are animal lovers, We spend a lot of time after every disaster thinking about the animals as well as the people. What is hard is that these poor people know that the animals they have are on their own lonely and hungry and they can't even end their suffering humanely. No one can explain to animals what has happened and they will not understand where their owners have gone.

We're thinking of you and you animals and praying for you all. With love.

can anyone tell me where i can find out what is happening to all these animals not being allowed on the buses, i saw a little white dog on the news today being taken off a bus by a policeman, how could he do that, a dog that size takes up no room, and i live with 8 dogs, and would be lost without them, i would have gotten off the bus myself, rather than leave that dog there on its own,I would like to help financially if this little dog could be found, and any others that may suffer the same fate, remember dog spelt backwards is god,I am praying for all the people hit by katrina, god bless you all.

Linda, I happen to have some Zoo information.

This is what we know about the status of AZA member institutions in the affected area as of noon, August 30.

Audubon Nature Institute
The staff of the Audubon Nature Institute is safe. The physical plants at both the Zoo and the Aquarium suffered little damage. The staff will continue to assess the impact on the animal collections at all the Audubon facilities.

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo
The Zoo has no electricity, there are lots of trees down, but there were no animal losses. They are already working on clean up.

Alexandria Zoo
No information.

Jackson Zoo
The Zoo suffered very slight building damage and has about 35 trees down. There was no injury to any staff or animals. About half of the zoo has power. They will be closed for about a week while they clean up the trees.

Birmingham Zoo
The Zoo is without electricity, had some trees down but they suffered no animal losses.

Montgomery Zoo
The Zoo is without electricity, had some trees down, but they suffered no animal losses.

Hope that helps!

Granted, animals may not be everyone's first choice in saving... but they do deserve to be saved.

Rather than filling up the post boards with our opinions on whether we should save the pets too, let those of us who would like to help have the floor, and those of you who would rather discuss the relevance and importance of doing so take the discussion elsewhere.

I agree. Please stop the opinions on this board. This section is to help the animals. If you don't like animals then DON'T READ THIS SECTION!!!!!! Simple as that! We need to help the animal rescues as much as the people rescues. As an animal lover I can tell you that finding someone's lost pet IS helping the survivors of this horrible devastating situation as well. Don't you people understand that to someone who has lost everything it's not the home and lost possessions that are worrying them right now, it's the fact that they lost part of their families...their pets!!
So please, let's keep this section for what it's meant for. Ways to help the animals.

To date, we have had no hateful or counterproductive postings here, so many thanks to all the good people who are remaining focused on the immediate needs of the survivors!!

We will be discussing this situation for years to come, but right now there is immediate need, and that is where our energies, hearts, and minds need to be focused!
