It can be hard for someone to commit to driving people from, lets say, New Orleans to Dallas. If a displaced Louisianan has family or friends that they can stay with, let's try to give them a way to get there. Maybe you can drive from New Orleans to Beaumont, then hand them off to someone who can take them to Houston, and so on.
If you are able to offer a leg of a trip, please post it here so you can all get together.
Thanks!
Kim

Great idea....hope this gets organized by someone closer to the victims. Happy to drive anywhere in the Northeast. I am in NJ, orginially from New England and very familiar with the entire area. Any driving that needs to be relayed from PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, ME, or VT...I am available. Self employed & flexible schedule.
Please use my yahoo account - will not be checking this thread often: kathyinnyc@yahoo.com

I am coordinating with a woman in Houston to connect the victims there to people who have generously offered to open their homes here. We need a few things to make this happen.
1. If you have space/resources to house victims, please provide me with you location (neighborhood in NYC or town in the metro area), how many beds, rooms & dedicated bathrooms (if applicable) you can donate. Also HOW LONG these resources are available for free.
2. Here in NYC we need drivers to get victims from a central location (likely Port Authority) to their destinations - homes/apartments people are donating. Let me know if you are interested in helping this project to transport people (and have a valid, clean drivers liscense and car)
Please email me at getvictimstonyc@yahoo.com if you are able to do either of these things.
Best,
Kathy

Hello To All:
People in New Orleans are being bused to Houston which is probably farther from families and friends in unaffected areas. These are people who did not have the resources to leave New Orleans in the first place now how are they going to get back to family/friends/volunteer shelters?
At the moment going into the affected areas is useless and dangerous. Let's focus on putting people who have been rescued and registered into safe and friendly environments.
Everywhere we look there are people holding up their hands looking to help all the people devastated by Katrina.
I had a small idea to get a network going of caravans to get all the people who have been rescued in New Orleans
and brought to Texas, to their family/friends/volunteer's homes in unaffected areas.
The idea here is going to be to have a base in Houston, (which we still need to get established), the main source
of transportation will be buses from Houston to main centers and then individuals transporting refugees to outer
areas. We understand that the government is trying to get people home as soon as possible, but we imagine that
the government has enough to deal with, with people who have no place and no one to go to. Our purpose is to get
refugees with a safe haven but no resources, to that destination as soon as possible.
What we need:
Website Space (Web host) - website name is taken care of and temp site should be up at both www.KatrinaCaravan.com and www.KatrinaCaravan.org very soon
An 1-800 number for info and resources - Working on this, still may need someone to foot the bill
Individuals in the Houston, San Antonio, Baton Rouge and all evactuation hubs ASAP
People with connections to those in the Red Cross and FEMA
Buses: charter, touring, school (From Houston to major hubs, such as Oklahoma City, Tallahassee, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, DC etc)
Coordinators in major hubs
Individuals willing to pick up at city centers and drive people to suburban and rural areas
Individuals traveling to the areas of devastation who can transport refugees back on their way home
When things are up and running:
Food and water supplies for bus trips
Walkie Talkies
Clip Boards
Paper
