LAS VEGAS - There's a rising star on the competitive eating circuit. California man Joey Chestnut downed 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in ten minutes this weekend in Las Vegas to set a world record. That's eleven more sandwiches than the old record of 36.
Last month, Chestnut ate 50 hot dogs. Some say he's a threat to the reigning champ of food stuffing, Japan's Takeru Kobayashi.
Chestnut won the grilled cheese contest sponsored by the International Federation of Competitive Eating, the same group that runs the annual Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at New York's Coney Island.

I can't imagine anyone eating 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes. To me, that's just, well, gross. I have to admit that I love grilled cheese sandwiches, though, particularly with a little ham or tomato in them. If I were really hungry, I could probably eat three of them in a sitting and not think twice about it.
hmmmm . . . Only 44 more to go!
Dang. Now I have to go out and buy some bread and cheese. :P

Grilled cheese sandwiches.. mmmmm... always loved them, melty and crisp at the same time. When I first moved to the city where I still live, there was a little natural foods restaurant called The Garden of Delight. They served what is possibly the very best grilled cheese sandwich that I've ever had. Inch thick slabs of homemade whole wheat and honey bread, topped with your choice of tomato, mushrooms and alfalfa sprouts, topped by a thick slice of cheddar, edam or swiss cheese, and sprinkled with sunflower and sesame seeds, then grilled on the bottom and run under the broiler till the cheese was bubbly.
A few days ago, though, my son redefined grilled cheese for me. We were out of bread, and he wanted a grilled cheese sandwich. He rummaged around, and came up with the flour tortillas I keep on hand for quick rollups and meals. He took one, laid two slices of cheddar on top, covered it with a second one and folded the edges together, then grilled the whole thing in sesame oil. Needless to say, we have a new favorite quick-fix lunch now.

Saw the thread title, and thought it was yet another grill cheese sandwich being sold on Ebay!
I can't imagine eating that many if for no other reason the after effects!

Yes, I would suspect that somewhere around #4 or 5 grilled cheese sandwiches cease to be "comfort food"!
Chameleon, I think your son has discovered yet another spin on the quesadilla, which is one of our favorite fast snacks. We've learned that it's a great item to serve visiting children as well. Our standard recipe is a handful of grated Mexican cheese blend, available in most supermarket, folded into tortilla, toasted with a little butter, and served with salsa and sour cream. I guess that's pretty much anyone's standard, come to think of it!
But there are so many possible variations on the theme. I like spinach and feta cheese for one. Pesto works in a quesadilla too.
Ok, so maybe none of us will be eating 47 grilled cheese sandwiches, but I'll bet we could come up with at least that many variations on the theme! :D

Yep, Nico, we do them here often too - I've just never folded them into a square before. I like mine with refried beans and salsa inside, and I tend to skip the sour cream - I love the stuff, but if I start with it, I'll just eat the sour cream.

Poor Joey, he was the USA's great hope on the competitive eating circuit but he keeps coming in behind Takeru Kobayashi. Kobayashi, who's won the Nathan's contest for the last six years, holds a number of records:
Cow Brains: 57 (17.7 pounds) / 15 minutes
Hamburgers: Krystals: 69 Krystal Square Burgers / 8 minutes/ Nov. 13, 2004
Hot Dogs: 53 1/2 Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs and Buns / 12 minutes/ July 4, 2004
Rice Balls: 20 pounds rice balls / 30 minutes
And he's still a svelt 160 pounds.:D

They're really good with some pepper salami inside too.

Wonder if they take the crusts off the bread for competive eating like this? I'd think it would sure be a lot easier to swallow without crusts! :disbelief

I love grilled cheese, but I don't think I could ever eat that many. That's just crazy.
