In addition to a multi-vitamin, what other supplements do you take and why?

I went to renew my stash of a couple of things and the array of choices was over whelming!
How on earth is anyone supposed to know what to take for what?

Anyway, here's what I DO take and what I take it for.

Glucosamine/Chrondoitin/MSM complex

After overworking parts of my body, this has proven to be a miracle cure for some aches and pains.

I started taking it for my knees. I couldn't put any pressure on my knees without feeling a stabbing sensation. It was awful. Turned out I had one illiotibial band folded into my kneecap for months. The tendons in both legs was inflamed and in pain.

After 2 weeks of doubling the dosage the pain had subsided about 80% and I have been able to maintain the standard dosage for years.

Vitamin C - 1000mg 2-3 times a day

I began taking extra C when I was smoking, because that's what they tell us smokers to do. :D I continued even after quitting. I'll take extra when I feel something coming on, to help ward it off quicker. Don't know if it works or not, but my daily C habit is just that, a habit that I'll continue.

Calcium - 1000mg 2-3 times a day

Osteoporosis runs in the family. Enough said. :D

Niacin - 500mg with Breakfast

I've read several articles that tout an increase in this vitamin as an aide to decrease bad cholesterol, another thing that runs in the family.

Flaxseed Oil - 1000mg with meals

Articles and studies show this supplement also aids with cholesterol.

I think that about covers it.

So, what do you take?

I take an iron supplement, and probably *should* take a calcium supplement, too.

Just calcium for me besides the multi. Sometimes. :wave2: I should probably get some extra C when it gets colder again, too.

I'm taking glucosamine and chondroitin but am thinking of stopping when I run out of my current supply. It's not helping. I think that's a function of a wrong diagnosis, rather than the product, though.

I take St. John's Wort, flaxseed oil, lutein (I have glaucoma, and my ophthalmologist recommended it!) and a regular ol' multivitamin every day.

I take a multi vittie when i remember. I wish i could find something that would pep me up some so i get motivated to do more around the house. I all in to these funks of inactivity. I need something like caffeine to keep me moving without the nervousness i get from caffeine.

I haven't been taking any supplements at all for about a year now. I used to be big about supplements, but got busy (or lazy or both). I feel the same still, no worse. I've been eating healthy, though, so that helps.

I use Mega Men's multivitamin, NO-XPLODE, and whey protein. This combination has served me extremely well!

I recently bought chewable C and I hope it helps keep the number of colds around here down this year. I had a brand a few years ago that tasted horrid, but these really aren't so bad. :jump:

I just take a multi-vitamin the time released one works really well I notice I have more energy throughout the day and am a lot less sluggish. I also take calcium but I just get it from chewing on "tums".

I really want to try flaxseed oil and the fish oil (omega 3's) I'm just not sure what's a good place to get them from.

I always go to GNC for my supplements. I really feel like the people out there are looking out for me and give me the advice that I need, not that I just want to hear.

When you're deciding where to buy, remember that price isn't the only consideration. I found out recently that even the most popular supplements have varying strengths. Oh, and watch the size of pills, too... a family member of mine used to take HUGE pills that were very hard to swallow... I believe it was glucosamine, and now I found out that's sold in chews, powder form, *and* liquid. Many vitamins and supplements come in chewable form now, too, for people who can't take pills.

Are there multiple purposes/ advantages to using fish oil? I keep hearing about it, but what is it taken for exactly? I'm thinking joint health... is that right?

I never failed to take my vitamin C, ferrous sulfate and calcium everyday. I think this is badly needed by a woman and so I put great effort to take it everyday. I also want to add vitamin E on my list since I need it to fix my skin.
