Perhaps the most widespread reach of the case stems from expert testimony during the trial. Hudson struck from the record the trial testimony of a prosecution physicist, Saami Shaibani, who overstated his resume and qualifications.
Durham County District Attorney Jim Hardin said he will soon ask the state attorney general to investigate the testimony of Shaibani.
Hardin said he would be a potential witness and cannot pursue the case himself. He is waiting for a copy of the Peterson trial's 18,000-page transcript, which he will forward to the Attorney General's Office.
Shaibani has testified in numerous other trials in several states, and lawyers from across the country have also taken an interest in the Peterson transcript. "What is somewhat comforting is to know that it's having an effect in other cases where Shaibani got away with his dog-and-pony show," said David Rudolf, Peterson's trial defense attorney.
