I was torn on whether to post this here or in the exercise forum. But since I perceive the biggest obstacle of changing to a healthier lifestyle falls on the diet and nutrition side of the equation, I decided on this one.
:)
That out of the way, is anyone watching this? I caught the episode last night, but I'm not sure when it started.
Last night we followed 2 different families with 2 very different problems through 8 and 12 week challenges respectively.
The family doing the 8 week challenge really had it rough.
Married couple with 4 boys ranging from 6 months to 12. Mother run ragged caring for them and the house. Dad had diabetes he needed to control.
They were hispanic, so the diet thing was very interesting. I'll have to find some of their recipes since I LOVE mexican and tex-mex.
They held tight as they faced a medical crisis with the baby, and came out to lose a noticeable amount of weight, retrain their eating and learn to enjoy exercise. I do hope they continue now that the crisis with the baby has passed.
The family doing the 12 week challenge REALLY needed help.
Dad was almost 400 lbs, mom about 40 lbs over weight. 12 year old son was so out of shape that it took him over 12 minutes to run a mile. Younger daughter was a cutie, but definitely on her way to the miserable life of an "apple". I know this life well.
They had amazing results and lost around 145 total. Mom really had the most dramatic change to me, she looked 10 years younger. In fact, I wasn't sure that was even her until she spoke!
Now granted, Discovery Channel set these people up with doctors, trainers, and dieticians. This helped tremendously, I'm sure, but they most definitely struggled.
Family 2 was put to a test after the first 2 months: dinner on the town with grandma and grandpa at their favorite italian restaurant. They didn't know they were being watched either. I would have failed the pizza set-up in a heart beat. They passed this test with flying colors. It was very humorous.
So, I'm assuming we'll see 1 or 2 families go through the entire process on every show. I like that, because it sinks in better for me.

Discovery health has tools available on their website, not sure if it's too late to sign up or not, but here's the link:
http://health.discovery.com/BodyChallenge/BodyChallenge.do
It's more restrictive, and unless you've all ready signed up, you've missed weeks 1 and 2 like I have.
Another GREAT site that you can jump in at your own pace is:
http://www.sparkpeople.com/index.asp
This used to be a paid site years ago, but for what ever reason, they're free now. It has great tools as well, and I actually prefer it over the limited DHC site. But hey, life's all about choices, right?
I'd be interested in sharing stories about the weekly episodes.......
